The chess museum in Ströbeck was inaugurated on 24th of May 1991 and made an old wish of people in Ströbeck come true.
Such plans where made already since the 1920ies. The biggest problem for realization was the missing of a suitable building for a museum. Finally the old and dilapidating house next to the chess tower and the old tower itself, where the imprisoned chess teacher was kept nearly 1000 years ago, presented themselves for such a project.
In 1985 friends of chess and Ströbeck's started to rebuild the old house. Finally in 1991 during the chess festival in May the chess museum was inaugurated.
Josef Cacek, retired chess teacher of the Dr. Emanuel
Lasker-School in Ströbeck, indefatigably collected the countless exhibits and presented them in the museum. In the following years he imparted his knowledge about Ströbeck and Ströbeck's unique chess tradition to all the visitors in with dedication. Under his direction the chess museum became a famous attraction not only for friends of chess.
For health reasons Josef Cacek had to give up the direction of "his" museum, but still helps and gives advice when necessary.
Soon the multitude of exhibits got too much for the space of the little museum. The old town hall of Ströbeck, since years only partly used, could become the new home of the chess museum. After some time of planning the renovating and rebuilding of the house as a museum could start with support of the European promotion programme Leader+.
Not only new exhibition rooms, also a courtyard with a garden chess bring new possibilities for the museum. In addition there is a little chess library with a reading room and a media room to show the old films about Ströbeck and for other performances.
For the presentation of the exhibition a professional didactic conception was developed to meet the growing demands of visitors from Germany and abroad.
The symbol of the new chess museum is the "Schleich", a piece from the courier chess. It is to be seen as the logo of the chess museum on this homepage as well as on the nameplate at the museum's building. The Schleich is also a main character in the musical "Ströpker Zeitsprünge" that was prepared for the » cultural villages' meetings in Ströbeck in 2006.
The moving of the chess museum into new and spacious premises is connected to the meetings of » "Cultural Villages of Europe" in 2006, when Ströbeck was host for 11 other European villages.
